Hating rearfacing

A friend just messaged me on FB with a question about her 21moth old dd. She gave permission to share here.

What do you suggest for someone whos kids gets sick rear facing. We're having major trouble with Zoe. She has always hated and screamed in her car seat but now that shes older its getting worse and worse. She will scream and squrim until the straps have worn her skin raw. She will scream until she gets sick. We've tried singing, reading, special car seat snacks, ive spent many hours leaned over the seat nursing and nothing is calming her anymore. I am a huge advocate for not letting a baby cry it out but that is whats happening. She has started saying she is scared and sad when we talk about the car and car seat. We've also noticed that her whole personality has changed she freaks out everytime someone gets their shoes on and she knows she has to get in her seat. Allen put her forward facing and she is not just fine but actaully likes getting in. Im having major guilt about this but I dontknow what to do. It feels like no matter how much safer it is her emotional well being is being compromised. IT doesnt matter if we are going for a 2 min drive or a 2 hour drive ( which we dont even do anymore, we will not even attempt to take her into abby) She screams until she is about to pass out. I think I know what i have to do but for someone who is very much for extended rear facing this is a really really hard decision. Thanks

Can Mom sit with her in the back seat when dad is with them. How old is their car? Does it have air bags? I would be tempted to put her up front *I have done this with Nevaeh. She would get her self so upset she would be puking*

Maybe RFing in the middle, at the most upright angle possible and giving her a crib toy that has a soft mirror so she can play and see her parents. I know it sounds like allot but that is what we did with my older daughter until our son was born and she had someone to occupy her.

It sounds like she doesn't like not being able to see mom and dad. I would try a mirror so she can see you and go from there. A parent sitting next to her could work as well.

My understanding from reading it is that they are sitting next to her- she says that she's even gone so far as to lean over and nurse her while they were driving.

She could try a different seat, more upright, and in a different position. But if she is still crying/screaming/puking/passing out, I'd turn her. I'd put her in the middle with a top tether and be ok with it.

There has to be a balance. This child is making herself sick, which is an immediate concern. The possibility of a crash is a hypothetical. They can always ff her for a few weeks and keep trying her rfing every so often and switch her back if her fears/sickness goes away.
