wwyd - frayed harness

So I recently had occasion to remove the cover and harness straps from our Frontier - and discovered that the harness was frayed right near the black metal buckle that attaches the harness to the underside of the shell. I called Britax. They are sending me replacement straps. But I got to wondering why the harness frayed there in the first place - seems to me like a strange spot for it and we hardly ever even adjust the straps on that seat - so I checked the slots the harness straps go through and they are both relatively rough, with one obviously worse spot. Do you think it would be o to file those edges down lightly? I can't imagine that would compromise the safety of the seat, but what to do I know?
I am going to call Britax tomorrow but wondering what specifically I should be asking them. Any recommendations?
Thank you - and check those straps, even on the underside!
