I was told that the only thing that it could effect is the gas mileage. My CRV blew them every year, I am not sure why. The last one we choose not to replace it because it was $300 each time.

Yes it regulates how the amount of gas you use so it effects the gas mileage. I know ours went out in the van and caused it to run very rich so it was using a ton of fuel. Then the excess gas going through the exhaust ruined the catalytic converter. That's my understanding anyhow, but DH is the mechanically inclined one.

If it's cheap to replace now, id do it. My ex had one go out on his truck. He ignored it, but where we live you have to have an emissions inspection before renewing your tags. It caused him to fail emissions and resulted in over $700 to get it all fixed (for what would have been a $40 part iirc).

We don't have emissions testing here, but if its going to cause my gas mileage to go up, I'll be calling the shop on pay day to see what can be done.

Thanks ladies!!

I never had any change in gas mileage with mine. It also did not cause any damage to the rest of the car. I would wait & see how your car responds.

I never had any change in my gas millage in my Kia...my sister still drives it and it's still on  Since it didn't effect anything and we don't have emissions testing here I never got it fixed.

:yeahthatlove:

Over time, it can definitely ruin your catalytic converter(s), which is a VERY expensive (think thousands) repair so I would definitely get it fixed when you can.

As all the others said, not a big deal to replace immediately.

A word of advice on replacement - its a very easy fix, and you can buy the part online (I bought my last one on amazon even!). If you are mechanically inclined or you have any friends that are, I would rate this as something that anyone who can change their own oil could do.
