Teaching a friend

Hi! A friend asked me tonight to teach her how to install a car seat. She is an occasional babysitter and the dad leaves the seat at daycare for her. It is one that the bar pulls down in front (overhead shield I think?) and it is cosco if I remember correctly. The child is 3 or 4. Don't know the details on the kid but I would estimate that he should be about at the weight limit too (he is in the same class as my nanny boy)
So 2 questions... I read on here these types of seats are not as safe, what can I tell her? This is just occasional so she would not go out and get a new seat.
And any tips on teaching her? I have a Nautilus that I can teach her the basics on (she does not have access to the seat until she gets the kid from daycare), but neither of us have kids (in college) and I have no idea how to teach someone. Is it better to learn seatbelt install or latch? And is there a way to find the manual? I like to be thorough about it and make sure we don't miss anything.
Thank you! Hope that wasn't too long, just didn't know what to tell her and figure some help is better than none.

First of all, flip the seat over and find the sticker with the date of manufacture. Many, though not all, overhead shield seats are expired. If it's expired, it must be replaced.

If it's a Cosco seat, they have the manuals available online. You'll need the DOM and model number from the sticker.

Ok thanks! I will tell her to check that next time she has him. Is there a way to access the manual without the model number or DOM? I have neither and she really wants me to teach her before she works next. And how long until they expire? Thank you!

If it's a Cosco convertible, it's probably 6 years. Look on the shell for "Do not use this seat after XXXX" embossed in the plastic, where XXXX is a year. It will be black on black, so hard to see.

You can't look up the manual without knowing exactly what seat it is.
