Car seat needed for air/rental car use

We'll be traveling in October with my son who'll be 15 months, weight unknown, but probably around 20-22lbs. He will have his own seat on the plane and I need a convertible that will be easy to fly with and install easily in random rental car.
We already have a TFP for him but there's no way I'm taking that on the plane. We don't need another carseat but will buy one just for this trip and future trips.
I've heard that the Scenera is a good option for travel, but has a 22lb FF limit. DS, may or may not be 22lbs by then. FF would probably be easier on the plane, even though he will be RF in the car.

Are there any other low cost options that would work for our situation?

I haven't personally used seats on a plane (air travel isn't my cup of tea), but I've heard many people recommend the Scenera, both RF and FF, even on a plane. In addition to the weight minimum for FF, there is also a 34" standing height minimum. At 15 months old, he doesn't meet the AAP recommendation for forward-facing anyway. It does sound like you're aware of that, since you mentioned he'd be RF in the car.

Is there a reason you don't want to RF on the plane? At least if he's RF, he won't be kicking the seat of the person in front of him. ;) Also, he won't drop toys down onto the floor that could roll under the seat. He'd also be facing you, which could help keep him happy. The greater recline angle might also make him more comfortable and more likely to fall asleep on the plane.

If you do go with the Scenera, pack a towel in your carry-on to roll up and use if necessary to adjust the recline angle in the plane (if RF) and/or the car.

The Scenera is pretty good for travel. I also love the Coccoro, but that's much more expensive.

I'm fine with forward-facing kids on planes before I would in the car, but 15 months is still awfully little, plus he likely won't meet the minimums for forward-facing. The Scenera will fit rear-facing, and if you're flying a US-based airline, you're within your right to use it rear-facing.

Okay, we'll get the Scenera and I'll have my husband install it RF. We're flying Jet Blue and the seats have a lot of room so it should fit easily. We'll have a towel with us as well.
Thanks for the help!

Practice in a car before you leave. It will be a little different then your truefit. We have owned a scerena and it worked well for us. Our nephew is currently riding in it.
