need help for booster unbuckler

A friend on FB asked for help. There's an 8yr that's constantly unbuckling himself. He's in a graco booster and has autism. I was thinking of suggesting velcro, but was told he's ok with textures.

Couple of ideas for any kid who does this:

1) flip the buckle to the "button" part is close to the seat

2) keep child's hands/mind occupied with other things: music, dvd, handheld game that is used ONLY in the car, or fidgets - http://www.addconsults.com/store/index.php?cPath=34

W/o knowing where on the spectrum he falls, it's difficult to know if any behavioral things would work. It's usually suggested to tell child you are going somewhere they really like to go to (playground, ice cream) and as soon as child unbuckles, to stop the car and go home. "Sorry, we can't go to _____ because you're not able to travel safely."

If the issue continues, he made need to have a special needs seat or a vest in order to travel safely. While the items are pricey, insurance will often help pay for them as durable medical equipment needed for safe transport.

Yes, unfortunately some kids with autism can be persistent unbucklers, regular "solutions" won't work, and they will need a floor mount vest that they can't reach to unbuckle.

Does the child have a team of therapists? This is something that can be brought up with them so a vest can be ordered through insurance if necessary.
