Seat incompatibility suddenly? (Radian XT)

I've had DD1 (4y4mo) FF in DH's car (BMW 3-series wagon) since DD2 was born 9 months ago. I installed her Radian XT with the seatbelt and top tether when I was 9 months pregnant  and remember it being tricky but not impossible. The install was rock solid. This past weekend, we uninstalled her seat to have the car thoroughly cleaned (stone fruit season is hard on a car!:p). This morning, I tried for over 30 minutes to reinstall the seat with NO luck. I simply couldn't get the belt to retract enough when I pulled the slack out (after I'd engaged the belt auto lock). I did not previously twist the belt stalk (it's rigid) or use a locking clip (tough given the Radian's belt path).

Soooooo...is the seat incompatible when it previously installed well? What should I try? Getting a new seat is a possibility, since I could conceivably hand down the Radian to DD2 RF in my Odyssey (right?).

No, no reason to change. Just to think ahead to what you plan to do at 48 lbs, which may take a long while.
