What to say?

A friend of DH and mine just posted a picture on FB of the carseat cover she just sewed for her 2 month old. Are there any links or pages that talk about not using custom covers? I know there's lot of things that say "if it didn't come with the seat, don't use it", but I can see people thinking that a seat cover would be an exception to that.

This same friend recently moved her almost-3-year old into a turbobooster, and then posted pictures of her folded forward in half when she fell asleep. I'm not sure how to bring this up to her, since she's out of state, and she and her husband are really more DH's friends than mine, and he doesn't share the same interest I do in carseats.

TIA!

If she's putting floppy 3 year olds in booster seats I don't think she's going to heed any advice about the cover unfortunately :(

I always find it so difficult to bring things like that up! People take it as a direct shot to their parenting and get really defensive if you don't really tip-toe around the issue. Sadly, tip-toeing around it also makes them more likely to shrug it off. No advice, but tons of sympathy

You really never know... I actually started my journey/research into car seat safety when my oldest daughter was a baby, and I was looking online to buy an after market cover for her infant bucket... I came upon a thread about them here, and the rest is history! I'm so thankful that I found it!

This would be my suggestion... Say something about the cover and how cute it is. Compliment her choice of material and her sewing ability. But then ask a question about if it is okay to use. Something like, "I think I remember reading something about not using homemade covers for car seat for safety reasons in the car seat manual or online or in a magazine." Then you can offer to find out some information if she wants. Then you aren't the one saying you are doing something wrong - which can put a person on the defensive. But your comment can get her thinking about whether it is safe.

Maybe something like, "that's beautiful! Where did you ever find fire retardant material in such a pretty pattern?"
