How unsafe?

We're heading off on a big roadtrip. Daughter has chosen to ride in the Harmony Literider (she fits fine, belt is positioned well, there are headrests) in the center position. There are no cupholders. I found -- and cannot find to link -- a little plastic tray with cupholders and a cubby that can be seatbelted in next to her. The plastic is relatively soft. I would, of course, prefer NOT to have it thrown at my head, but don't think it would cause serious injury if it did happen.

Would you allow it?

I'd do it too. Just wondering though, wouldnt the cup be more likely to become a projectile anyway? (my kids always have cups in their holders, purely this is curiosity)

Yeah, the cup is more likely to be a projectile, but I've already mentally run the risk assessment and decided plastic sports-top bottles are something I can live with.

It does seatbelt in, but I don't think the plastic would meet FMVSS213 standards, kwim?

I'd use it. Definitely. Especially since the water bottle, I would think, would be the bigger projectile risk and you've already made peace with that (as would I).

I made some bootleg, not even "pretend" crash tested (you know, like the BundleMe, etc), version when we went on our roadtrip in June. Since DS1 sat by himself back in the 3rd row and it'd be difficult to get stuff to him, I had him keep his snacks/water bottle/books/stuff in his backpack. Then I seatbelted the backpack, through the top loop and both shoulder straps, next to him. It was super classy.:p
