Feeling good about Target!

I have to give Target some serious credit.

I had my first ever car seat check-up event today (not counting the one we did at the end of our CPST course). The first person who came to us was a very nice Grandma. She didn't have her grandson with her, but she had his stats (height, weight, age) handy. And an Evenflo Maestro which she had purchased just two weeks earlier and was having problems with.

Well, the problems she was having were exactly what would be expected of a 3 y.o. child in a booster... leaning out of the seat, tipping it over, etc.. The child was too heavy to ride in the harness (over 50 lbs, and she had stopped using the harness because it didn't fit around him), and the belt wouldn't say in the belt guide in booster mode, probably because he was several inches too short and didn't meet the minimum height requirement for using the seat as a booster. He was just a short, very stocky child and this was the wrong seat for him. The poor Grandma was actually in tears when we explained to her that at her grandson's weight and height she could not use this seat for him according to the manufacturer's instructions and we couldn't assure her of any safe way for him to travel in the seat. And besides that, he was really too young and clearly too immature (according to the problems she said she was having) to be riding in a booster. But she simply could not afford yet another (more expensive) car seat after having just forked out $80 for one she couldn't use.

I recommended that she take the seat back to Target with the receipt and see whether they'd give her credit toward a Graco Nautilus. She came back a couple hours later with a Nautilus and said they'd given her full credit! Even though the Maestro was clearly used (had crumbs in it and everything). I am feeling very good about Target right now. I may have to shop there more often.

Good thing she had her receipt! When I worked there they'd take most anything back but it had to have a receipt.

Great story! It is nice to hear about people wanting to do the right thing and big companies being nice. Double dose of goodness

Target wouldn't take my roundabout 50 back when I tried to return it. I had to replace a crashed seat, it was not a well thought out purchase and I figured out it wasn't really what I wanted on it's first ride.

I was taking a lunch break when she came back, but from what the other tech said I think the Nauti worked out. She didn't have her grandson with her but I assume they helped her get the seat installed in her car. It should fit the child (weight was 53 lbs if I recall; 41" tall). Hopefully he'll be ready to booster by the time he hits 65 lbs. There was no way she could have afforded a Frontier for him. :(

I'm sorry they wouldn't take yours back, Agave. I was so happy when she told me she still had the receipt because I thought there was a chance, but I was still a little surprised.

It will probably show up as an as-is seat on nobetterdeal.com :p

Honestly, the seat should be safe. She had all the parts and instructions with it, it had only been used a couple of times, no accidents, no washing. So hopefully if they don't just recycle it, it will end up in the hands of someone who really needs it at a bargain price.

The seat actually goes back in their crusher. At least they did when I worked there. If you ever have a problem with losing your receipts, start using your card to buy things. OR always keep a gift card with a little bit of money on it and use that to partially purchase everything. The card number is stored in their system and is then listed with the items purchased on that card. I am HORRIBLE about keeping track of receipts. So every time I return things, I just hand them my card. They swipe it and you're done. The same thing would happen with a gift card. If you always keep say $5 on a card, just use that to partially pay for your purchase. That way you always have a back up "receipt".
