I know this is a decision that ultimately is mine to make, but I want input from others on what they would do in my situation.

Child is somewhere around 3.5yo. Petite. Will be outboard in both vehicles.

Car1: No tethers, cannot be retrofitted. Not so great on crash testing (4 stars frontal, 3 stars side, "Poor" frontal). Child is not in this vehicle often, maybe once a week.

Car2: Tethers. Pretty good crash testing (5 stars frontal, 4 stars side, "Good" frontal). Child is in this vehicle daily.

One car will have a RFing seat for this child. The other car seat is to be determined, but will not be a convertible, it will be FFing.

Which car gets the RFing seat and which gets the FFing seat?

Oh, wait, I was thinking this was a 2-year-old, not a 4-year-old.

I'm more than comfortable with a 4-year-old FF. So I'd use the FF seat in the everyday car and the RF seat in the less-safe car. If that.

I would put the rear-facing seat in the car that is used most often.

And be content that, at 3 1/2, occasionally FF is safe. Get one of the seats that has good ratings for untethered use (Nautilus comes to mind), and don't sweat it.

rearfacing seat in car #1

forward facing in #1... no question...

why won't they get another convertible carseat? (not that I have issue with a 3.5yr old ff, just curious)

I uh... would buy a Scenera. Yeah, I know that's disallowed.

I don't know. I would probably RF in the less-safe car, but I really wouldn't like it. I think I would get twitchy seeing FFing in my rearview all day.

If I opted for FFing in the tether-less car, it would probably be in a ProSport, Frontier, maybe Nautilus or RN. Preferably something with long belt path, though.

Car 1 - RF

Car 2 - FF

That's what I would undoubtedly do for my kiddo. HTH!

My twins are 4. Their everyday rides are FR85's, top tethered, long belt path....and has been for over a year. They are both outboard (one 2nd row, one third row) and Kaylee is rf'ing in the center in a BV. Oh, and Ricky is also very petite at just 30.6lbs and 39" at 4yrs old.

So, having said that, I would put the rf'ing seat in the car with no top tethers provided you get a good fit....and ff in the main vehicle. Nothing unsafe about a FF 3.5yr old that is top tethered.

FTR, Ricky rides FF in an untethered seat in our farm truck as well.
