Three across in a CRV; Impossible?

My in-laws want to buy a new car. It seems like they specifically want one that they get a three across in for my boys and their granddaughter. They mentioned a CRV. I've heard not so good things three seats in this car and mentioned that. I told them I could research here about what could work, but they are pretty loyal to Honda and would like decent fuel economy. It tried searching the three across thread, but couldn't find much. That should probably tell me right there.

FWIW, they have a Nauti and a classic Marathon for seats right now.

It's gonna be tight but not impossible. Probably not possible with the seats they have now. Are they going to leave the seats installed all the time?

Maybe the salesperson was telling them about it having LATCH in all 3 positions and they took that to mean that you can easily do 3 across? I bet that's what happened. It does have LATCH in 3 positions but you can only use up to 2 at a time because there's only 5 LATCH anchors: LATCH-Seatbelt-LATCH or Seatbelt-LATCH-Seatbelt. But for 3 across you'd almost definitely have to do seatbelts anyway.

Agree it may take some thinking but definitely not impossible.- I currently have three across in our 2007 CR-V, two forward facing Radians and a rear facing Corcorro and we have a bit of room to spare.

It would depend on the year CRV. Are they looking for 2011? They 2011's have these weird plastic hinges in the center that prevent a lot of different seats from installing there. I also don't think that its going to work with the seats that they have.

I have a 2009 and I can get 3 across with a Radian in the middle. they would definitely have to buy new seats but it's not impossible!

Also I don't know about the 2011 version but I'm pretty sure they do not have 3 sets of latch. Mine has five latch hooks, you can use it in any of the 3 positions. But if you use the middle position you cannot use latch in the outboard position behind the passenger seat. When you're doing 3 across in a smaller vehicle you would probably want to use the seat belt install for at least 1-2 of the seats anyways because it gives you more room.

I'm not even sure they have looked at anything yet. I think they just thought SUV would = easy for lots of carseats. It takes them a loooong time to make decisions like this. It's likely they won't actually buy anything until next summer. But they could surprise me.

It will probably be the latest model. I usually do all the installs, but if I'm doing a tight three across I will try to find a tech in their area to help.
