Question Tethering to buckles?

I was perusing the successful 3 across thread and came across a pic of seats tethered to the buckles in the row behind them. I have never seen this in all my zillion hours of car seat obsessing. How does this work? Is it common practice? Just want to know what I have been missing all this time!:)

Thanks in advance.

What you are seeing is the retrofit tether anchor for older Suburbans. You clip a piece into the seatbelt from the back row and tether to that. The sucky part is then you are wasting a seating position. So no, it's not common practice, and it's only acceptable in the Suburban.

Well, there are some other cars in which it's acceptable. Some older models before tether anchors were standard allow it. OP, if you search "tether to seatbelt" or "tethering to seatbelt" you will probably find more info on why, when, and how it's done. :)

Yeah, she had specified buckle, so that's why I mentioned the Suburban.

Ah, I see. Some people say buckle for either part, which is what I was assuming. Though I think there may be another model (2?) with the same retrofit as the Suburban.

Like with any non-standardized installation, it has to be approved by both the vehicle and restraint manufacturers. Not many vehicles allow for it.
