Getting insurance to pay for car seat?

Posting here based on the recommendation from someone in the chat forum.

I know there are seats on the market which should fit my 6 year old with a harness, but I don't know how long they'll last. She needs harnessing, both for low muscle tone and behavior reasons, she has cognitive issues. and will always need a five point harness.

She's currently 42 inches and 42 pounds, but her torso height is already 17+ inches, as she has a chromosome disorder that leaves her with very short arms and legs. Her adult height may only get up to 4 foot 8 or so, but that will be a majority torso.

She's currently in a Boulevard, but it expires in January.

I'm looking at the Frontier 85 and Recaro ProSport. Other suggestions? Special needs seats? If it's anything more expensive than those, we'll definitely want to figure out how to get insurance to cover it.

Given that we're having a new baby in December (who will need a new seat) it would be good to keep our costs down, but quality and longevity of the seat is ultimately the primary goal.

This is what I did. I talked to our specialist about my concerns and received a referral to see a physical therapist for a seating evual. She did some stuff with him and wrote up a report. The report and script went to insurance with the seat estimate that a medical durable goods rep had gotten and a preauth from insurance. Once approved, teh seat is ordered, then another visit for a fitting.

Intially I went with a local ped pt. Which was fine, other then they had no car seat knowledge, nor did the durable goods company. That company (alliance) was horrid to deal with and wasted a lot of time for nothing. They did help me get some sample seats to try.

One sample seat was at a peds clinic that specializes in special needs seats and has a car seat fitting clinic. I had no idea. But the therapist is also a cpst with a special needs cert. She was great. When alliance really screwed up, she stepped up, found a new company, and is pushing everything through.

I tried the snugseat pilot (a monterey booster with a 4 point postioning harness), columbia 2400 (pretty much the biggest thing out there), and the merritt roosevelt which won hands down.

My kid hated the frontier and only had a pinch of room. He has almost outgrown his britax husky which just expired - 8/6 53", 63# short torso.
