If you see an expired carseat?

I know I'm going to see this woman Thursday again at camp drop-off. We all smile at each mom's babies. We nearly all drag in an infant seat. :)

She carries an Evenflo Discovery. It looks like it's being used properly except it seems years and year old. It seems like a 5 pt. harness but the buckle has a red PUSH or PULL button. Almost as if there is just one clip?

I can't stand there with my new seat and say, hey, you need a new carseat. Her other child is 4 so I imagine she used it with him (and maybe others if she has more). I don't think they have a lot of money. If I had a new seat to give her, sure, I could mention I had one that just really needed a good home and would she be interested. But I don't.
(And the seat is so dirty that it's possible the dirt makes it look older than it is. How embarrassing if it isn't expired at all and I assumed it was).

Do I ignore this? Hey, if you're as carseat crazy as I am, admit it, this would bug you, wouldn't it? Just a bit? :)

Oh yeah, working in retail I have to bite my tongue all day long. I've talked to a few parents who seem responsive but I'd never get any work done if I gave them all 'the talk'. I usually start with something like "oh I've never seen that seat/cover/etc. before. Where did you get it?" then go from there. "Baby's growing so fast! (s)he's not going to fit in there much longer" works too for the ones exploding out of the infant seats.

In your case you might be able to bring it up by mentioning how is was smart they kept the seat around from the older child for the new baby, or something to that effect. Or even ask about the interesting buckle you've never seen. Then if they say yeah it's from an older kid mention yours only lasts X years, you didn't know they made ones that were good for Y years. Playing dumb and/or curious is usually a good approach I've found ;)

Recalls ate a good " in" too. The parent can feel blameless when there is a recall because it's not their fault.
