How is it different?

How is all the bulk added with cd different from the bulk added by heavier clothing (aka jacket) in a carseat? The other day I really had to let out M's harness when she was wearing a prefold and cover. By a lot! Not trying to be all snarky, but wouldn't there be some type of compression in a crash? I know that it is down more on her hips but, 'splain it to me better. :) Please?

Cloth diapers are already compressed. Also the extra bulk is in the bottom area, which isn't as problematic as bulk in the upper body. Loose shoulder harnesses due to compression carry a risk of ejection, whereas the hip straps wouldn't affect it so much.

Yes, and the compression happens in the direction of the crash. So, if you're hit from the front, a big poofy coat will compress in the front. (Toward the front of the car.)

Most of a cloth diaper's bulk is on the bottom, so something would have to hit your car from the bottom to make it compress. Or, you know, the aliens would have to suck your car up at a very high rate of speed.

I figured it was something along these lines. Although now I am very worried about aliens sucking up my car! Just need to be ready when dh straps her in wearing fluff and he has to have the harness loose...he is very, very good about strapping in the kids. :)
