Question about ears

Can ears have a discharge other then wax? DS has a cold and he has discharge from his nose and eyes and he just told me there was something in his ear. I looked but it doesn't look like wax, although wax has many looks, and it was crunchy like dired on nose snot. Can the ear drain and have a discharge? He has had problems with his ears and them draining and what not, he hasn't recently complained that his ears hurt but I am wondering if they might start to since he is so plugged and the crustiness coming from his ears makes me wonder what it is. Does anyone know? TIA

We've had lots of drainage from ears here! 2 of my 3 kids have/had tubes and I think maybe that's why they frequently (well, not all that frequently) had stuff coming out of their ears, especially when they have colds. I actually think it's good that it's coming out because it won't build up and cause pressure & pain, but I don't have any real basis for thinking that. X had a burst ear drum one time and there was lots of blood coming out of his ear. The doc told me that it wasn't a big deal, that it wasn't painful or anything, and that it actually relieved the pressure. It was scary for me, though!
Oh, and yes, it dries and gets all crunchy, especially when they wake up in the morning.

Thanks, it isn't bloody. He has had tubes that fell out last fall. He has had ear infections since that took over a month to clear up and I know the last time we were at the specialist his one ear didn't want to finish draining. If the one is draining I will take that as a good sign and just watch for signs on the other one.

Take it from me, my ear drum burst at the age of 15...and it hurts! Maybe in kids it's no different to them than an ear infection, but it was painful. Not that this really helps you in any matter, but just wanted to chime in. ;)

Yes, burst ear drums HURT. A LOT!
But, drainage not from a burst eardrum is fine. Just make sure you clean the crusty stuff off or it will become sore underneath.

Drainage means that the eardrum has released some pressure. So, if it hurt before, it might not hurt as much now..

If it was my kid, I'd get him to a chiropractor asap(oh wait, I did do that w/my kid.. avoided tubes and have been ear infection free for 2 years!).
