Letter to local sherriff's dept

I just wrote and emailed this letter to our local sherriff's dept.

I am writing to inform you of what I just witnessed. One of your uniformed officers just put his son in danger. I just witnessed a uniformed K9 officer pick up his two year old child from daycare in *****, and place him in the front seat of his cruiser with no child restraint, placing the shoulder belt behind the child. Placing the child in the front seat in front of an active airbag in a seat belt with the shoulder belt behind him is dangerous and illegal.

Oklahoma state law requires all children under 6yrs or 60lbs to be restrained in an appropriate restraint. Your officer not only broke the state law, he put his child in great danger. As a public servant, he should be expected to be a role model for the citizens of our community.

It doesn't matter if the officer lived around the corner from the daycare, accidents can happen anywhere at anytime. He is not immune to the law. He is not immune to the laws of physics. Had he been involved in an accident on his way home, his child would have likely been killed.

I am a certified car seat technician trained in proper installation and use of child restraints. I have seen a lot of 'misuse', but his complete disregard for his child's safety is appalling.

ACK, both emails came back returned and I had to call and leave the info on their tip line. I couldn't let it go....I had to report it.

That's amazing. I wish people would have a bit more care with their children. How ever careful you think you can drive, anything can happen. Today a few blocks from my house some fool just shot out in front of me across an intersection. I could barely stop in time. I didn't see him coming at all. I still can't believe I didn't hit him. I swore in front of Hannah.

Right after he pulled out, another mother pulled out with her 2 three year olds unrestrained in the van...you could see them climbing around inside. They have 2 Nauti's....but didn't feel the need to buckle them in. :(

Send a letter, but make sure you use Sheriff's Office, not department. It is the correct term and some people really get their panties in a wad over it. ;)

Sent from my HTC Evo using Car-Seat.Org... please excuse typos and autocorrect!!

It might not be... Ours is *** County Sheriff Department. No Office ;)

I agree, follow up with a letter directly to the Sheriff.

Our's is Sheriff's Department too. No office here either.

Maybe you could bring some pamphlets to the daycare center and have them sent home with the kids. Or organize some kind of checkpoint or something. :shrug-shoulders:

You would think a deputy would know better than that. I agree that a letter directly to the sheriff would be the best, maybe they should all have some training.

PS. Our Sheriff is "office" as well.

Been there, done that already. Don't think this particular kiddo attended then though. Even at the check, we were not well received. :(

omg what is it with cops and lack of car seat use.. Fiona went to pre-school with a cops son, and they had nothing for him in the car, he stood in the back seat.. they did not even provide him with a backless booster for the field trip like required and the aunt who brought him was like "he don't need a baby seat" the teacher had to get a spare from upstairs.

what is even more messed up is my good friend just got a ticket for having an unrestrained 2 year old.. she is very good about car seat safety, the girl is still rear facing.. and always buckles her in decently.. but their daugther is on the spectrum somewhere and they are having a hard time, the girl got out of her car seat and was bouncing around the car and she went to pull over, and the cop lights came on as she was pulling over to get after her.

But they wont restrain their own kids.. she said she was glad the cop actually did something since most don't.
