Pet car seat invention idea

The recent thread on pet car seats made me want to share something I have been contemplating for a few months now and I thought it would be fun to share and glean ideas. I've been soooo tempted to design a REAL car seat for dogs. I wouldn't know how to get it manufactured or crash tested though.

But here's my idea: It would look like a convertible seat laying on its back

The harness would be real selt belt webbing and be a 3 point that would come from the back and buckle at the dog's chest while it's laying down. Then there would be a separate strap that fastens over top of it that adjusts like a lap belt. Voila 5 point harness!

There would be a lot of adjustment so it could accommodate little and big dogs alike, maybe even some sort of insert so tiny dogs could fit properly. The legs on a bigger dog would be allowed to dangle over the front but the elbows would need to be firmly planted on the seat. It still wouldn't be able to accommodate giant dogs, but it would be a start. :D

Here's my doodle. I drew it with a front adjust because I like that better :p

I credit my 3 year old for this idea because she buckled a ferret into a baby bucket and it got me thinking. lol

How in the world do you get a ferret to sit still long enough to get buckled in? Was it a stuffed toy?

Lol, no he's real (the picture of him buckled in is in my avatar) When he sleeps, he's almost in a coma so by the time he realized he was restrained, it was too late :ROTFLMAO:

And I have a petbuckle for my Lab, I don't trust it to keep her in place with my kids in the car and highly doubt it would save her life because it allows too much movement.

I think just about all the options out there right now are designed to just keep the dog from becoming a projectile, there's no actual concern for safety of the dog's body or well being.

Id love to see something that would actually save the dog from injury, not just the people.

Outside of a sturdy compact crate, though, I haven't been able to invision anything good yet.

This isn't too bad except I don't see the dog wanting to be forced into a specific position for a long time.

Sent from my Atrix, please excuse typos.

I like the idea, but it just looks like they would just fly out the front. Their legs wouldn't keep them in, ya know? But maybe if they wore a harness like the PetBuckle one, but more padded at the chest, then the seat belt straps went through it, it would keep them better restrained.

That's pretty much what I want. A seat that boosts them up so they can look out the window, but something that will keep them IN the seat in a crash and safe, not just away from me while driving.
