Great info - many thanks for all those links!!

Checked out all of these and decided that 8649 (Metro) or 8465 (Heatwave) will probably work for us; interestingly, the former is $40 more than the latter!

The only difference I can discern is that the Metro includes a peek-thru canopy and "Gracopedic" foam ... what is Gracopedic foam, and is it worth the addt'l $40??

The GracoPedic foam is brand new, and I don't know that anyone has seen it in real life yet. If you do try it out, please post back about it! :)

Kudos to Graco for adding to their site (on the convertible seats) Use rear-facing to 30 lbs. Granted it also says it can be used FFing 20-40 lbs, but no 1 year. Perhaps some progress IS being made.

BabyCenter has some seats on sale!

Speaking of Graco seats, The BabyCenter has some seats on sale that aren't shown on the Graco website. Does anyone know what model number "Liberty" is? I'm not thrilled with the pattern but the price($29.99) is great! See http://store.babycenter.com/category/gear/car_seats/booster;jsessionid=AWHU5I1QNQHIQCUAQMMCHPQ. I know models that start 8496 is supposed to be better than the models starting 8493. It appears that the models 8497 are just reversible??

Yes, I noticed that myself! In particular, I was considering the Cobalt Blue Snugride at:
http://store.babycenter.com/product/gear/car_seats/infant_carseats/4450

Very attractive, excellent price, and an LX5 model, judging from the descriptiong and one parent's comments!

I wanted to get the new Metropolitan, as it's rumored to have better padding (went to the store yesterday and was _stunned_ at how little padding some snugrides had!!), but couldn't find it anywhere local nor online - so I ended up getting the Heatwave from Amazon.
