Looking for ideas for keeping RF toddler cool with no AC

I usually only drive him in my car on the weekends but the poor guy is just drenched in sweat even for short trips. I spent $500 last summer to fix my AC for him, and now another part is broken, I'm not paying for any more non-mechanical repairs.

I like the idea of a light blanket over the seat while he's not in it, but I have to roll the windows down while I'm driving so it would just blow right off. I strip him down to his diaper on really hot days and would hate for him to be accidently burned by a buckle. Any suggestions?

You would really only need to cover the seat when you're parked, so the blanket blowing away wouldnt be an issue, right? If you want to keep it covered while you're driving when he's not in it, what about a bassinet sheet (like for a pack and play). It's elastic edges would go right around the seat and hold it in place until you take it off.

I put the dash air blowers on high and angle them up so the air deflects down on dd's head. That, combined with having the front windows open (she doesn't like the back ones down) and a sheet over the seat when we're not in the car seemed to work last year.

I use a pack and play sheet. It fits better than a regular crib sheet (too big) or a bassinet sheet (too small on most seats) It also keeps my seat covers from getting faded in DH's car with no tinted windows

Cool things to play with: cool cloths, partially frozen ice packs. Refrigerated "teething toys"

cold bottles/sippies of water will help. when it's really hot I'll keep a spray bottle full of water to cool down the kids.

We haven't had AC for a couple summers, it can be miserable :( . Good luck.

Lots of great ideas from everybody, and I bet he'd get a kick out of being sprayed with a spray bottle- thanks! :)
