    convertible car seat w/detachable base

Does anyone know of a safe convertible car seat where you can buy one car seat and a different base for multiple cars. We do not want to buy multiple car seats (one for each of two cars and one for grandparent/babysitter) but we do not want to have to transfer the car seat three times a day. (my husband drops off child at grandparents and I pick up child - sometimes the child rides in car with grandparents).

There's nothing like that on the market today...I think because the forces on convertible seats from heavier kids are SO extreme that the base connections are prohibitively heavy or expensive to engineer... basically, you need the seat or LATCH belts and top tethers to firmly attach most of the seat to the car. What most of us do is buy an expensive seat for one car, and an inexpensive yet easy to use seat for other cars (the Cosco Scenera is $30-$40 now, so even cheaper than a second base for an infant seat!)

    There is no such thing

I ditto jools. There are several low cost seats on the market that make a great 'second' seat for the 'other car', the babysitter, granma, etc.

The 40 dollar Cosco-Scenera 5 point seat is a good example
