The Safety of Roads in Your Area

(I hope this is the right place to post this!)

I was recently wondering about the non-vehicle related elements of road safety. Obviously there have been excellent advances in vehicle design, occupant safety and child restraints over recent decades but what about things such as the design and condition of the roads?

Do people feel that the roads in their area are safe? Are they well maintained or potholed? Is the quality of the surface good or bad? Does anyone avoid certain junctions or roads because of accident rates? Are there local or national campaign groups which work to try to solve these kinds of issues?

I am just curious because here in the UK, the condition of the roads is becoming a big issue – potholes are very common and the amount of maintenance appears to be in decline. There are no doubt government budget issues which play a part in how much funding goes towards road maintenance but I can’t help but feel some road surfaces are becoming really quite dangerous and I was wondering whether anyone has experienced similar issues in their local area and if so how these issues are addressed (either by campaign groups or government)?

Thank you very much in advance for any information anyone can provide, I really appreciate it.

I know in our area things have been improving in the last few years that I've been paying attention. Our area gets LOTS of freezing and thawing and salt use in the winter so our roads can get pretty beat up each season. Our crews then work hard to repair those each spring and summer. (Our joke in WI is that there are only two seasons, winter and road construction)

Also, I've noticed over the last 5 years or so lots of roundabouts going in at intersections that are busy or confusing. And they've been trying out some newer traffic lights around here to help clear up some confusion as to when to turn left (I know, seams like common sense but apparently not for some drivers). And I know in our valley they've been working on improving the main interstate widening it for the increase in commuting traffic volume over the last decade or so.

I can't say that my experience or thoughts travel for all of my state or nation, there are alot of uncontrolled backroads intersections all over the countryside in our state as well, but for my local area, I've been content seeing our local government work to make sure things are improving year-by-year.

I like our roads, to the point that I get nervous driving in some parts of the US. What I like most is that nearly every major intersection has dedicated left-turn lanes with lights so you don't have to edge out and judge traffic to make left turns.

Our roads tend to be very wide and pretty well maintained. It doesn't freeze here so the roads don't have many potholes etc from contracting/expanding.

The biggest danger in that regard is that it doesn't rain often, so oil builds up on the roads. Then when it rains it gets very slick.

Southern California has s reputation for crazy drivers, but I think we drive better than in most areas I've experienced.
