Accident replacement question

Hi,
I was rearended today my 2001 Honda Odyessey. My 8 year old ds was riding in a Monterary and I am trying to decide what to replace it with. He has been asking to go backless and I have told him he can when he is 9 (end of July). I am thinking I could just go backless now (like the clek to be able to latch it), but am not sure about the lack of side protection. He is 63 lbs.

Just wondering what others would do in this situation.

Thanks.

In my opinion, 8, almost 9 is old enough for a backless as long as they are good at staying in position. If you are worried about SIP you could have him sit in the middle if there is room.
