I was at Dorel today and saw a live side impact crash test. Whoa it was COOL! I got to talk to other car seat geeks at the company too. This only made me more anxious to get certified next month!

Of course what we all want to know:

  1. what were the criteria for the side impact test?
  2. what seat did they test?
  3. did the seat pass? ;)

:D

I was at Dorel today because they were having a grand opening of their new car seat check station! They now have at least 80 CPST's on staff. Plus they started their own Safe Kids chapter here.
They test the seats at 35 mph. It was the Complete Air being tested then and it did pass.

So I guess even though there's no standards for side impact testing, they don't test it by just throwing it against a wall like people often suggest...;)

Very cool and thanks for the videos!

I didn't get to ask about the dummy size but my guess is the 3 yr old dummy. They said they have been pushing for the government to set a side impact standard for car seats for years now but it's just not going anywhere fast.
I also got to see how they test chest clips, infant seat handles, etc.

They completely changed some of my thoughts on Dorel. Now if I can only get inside the other companies..... ;)
