70 chevy truck - need to settle an argument!

Please help settling our argument! We have a 1970 Chevy truck with three lap seatbelts (no shoulder belts), and are thinking about having a baby. I say it is too old and not safe enough to put any child safety seat to haul a baby around. My husband doesn't think so. He is more concerned us carrying more debt by getting new(er) car/truck.
Is there a restriction as to how old is too old? Can any of you tell me how I can find out this info? Are there any "special safety seat" or an adopter or something? Thank you very much for your help.

Baby or no, that's just not a very safe vehicle. If you can get the money together, any newer vehicle with lap/shoulder belts and airbags would be a big step up safety-wise. If you don't need a truck, a sedan or minivan would be a safer choice for a family. If you do need a truck, hopefully someone else can give guidance on some good choices.

If you're stuck with the truck, maybe someone can help you find a lap/shoulder belt retrofit kit that will work. (I think ez-on makes a universal one.)
