I was at my dds' ballet practice the other day and I was talking with two ladies I know. I have known both for quite some time. J is my good friend's stepdaughter who is a little younger than me with two kids. She doesn't much care for me because she doesn't get along with her stepmom. But J is so fake and puts on a good front so we always play nicey nice in public. M is an old coworker of mine with three little ones.

So today we got on the subject of my carseat dilemma. J mentions that I should just put dd2 in a booster. She saw one at Walmart for only $13.50 and the boosters start at 30 pounds. I very nicely stated that while yes, those are the minimum weight allowances, I am much more comfortable with using the safest carseat to the most maximum height/weight allowed. So that means that dd1 is in a booster, dd2 is in a harnessed booster, and dd3 is rearfacing. So then M pipes up and says, "wow, dd3 is rearfacing? I moved my ds at 9 months to a ff carseat!"

 Well, I very calmly told M that the new recommendation from the AAP states that at the very minimum children should be 2 and 30 pounds. Well J pipes in and says "I thought that was 1 and 20 pounds" And I replied that the new reccomendation was 2 and 30 and that I made sure I was very knowledgable about carseat safety. Well, J says, "I am very good about carseat safety too. I had to take a class when DS was younger" And I replied that her ds was five and I just took a class last week. I then reiterated that this was a recently added NEW reccomendation! :banghead: And she says, "Well I just don't know about that. I've never heard it" So I tuned her out and said to M that babies and children who forward face early are at risk for spinal injuries in an accident. M said that her doctor told her to ff her son because he was 20 pounds. I told her that unfortunately doctors are not always correct in these matters. I said (very loudly) that everyone else could do as they liked but I would never follow the bare minimum when it comes to my children's safety. Then I handed M some literature on the new reccomendation. I told her to keep it as I did not need it. I told her to please read it and not listen to anyone else who is misinformed.

As far as J goes, this is what I'd like to do to her!:duck:

Why oh why do people have to act like lunatics when their kids' safety is involved? Ok, vent over!

Oh brother, some people should jsut keep their mouth shut.
If you heard my SIL talking about car-seat safety you would go
She NEVER tightens the harness on her daughter's baby trend. There's like 5 inches of slack. I tell her all the time that if she got into a crash her baby would probably be ejected out of the seat. Her answers are " No she won't, the chest clip ( which is usually on the baby's belly anyway) will keep her in place, and also "you cannot tighten the harness till it's too close to the baby. it will cause hip dysplasia :banginghead::banginghead::banginghead: She put her 2 and a half foster kid/ niece in a Turbo booster and when the girl was 3 years 2 months she took the back off. I have known her son since he was 6 and a half and I have never seen him in a booster/ car seat. I got tired of arguing with her. She says she was an EMT for a few years and SHE KNOWS what she is talking about. Now I just try not to look at it when I see the baby with loose straps and the 3 yo in a backless booster.

Actually, the AAP policy statement as of *2002* stated that all toddlers should ride RF until the maximum weight or height limit of their convertible carseat ... the so-called "new" recommendation is merely a clarification that they not turn FF before age 2 because that is the earliest that spinal ossification begins (the old "1 and 20" was based merely on the fact that for too long convertible seats simply weren't designed to fit toddlers RF).

my cousin's daughter has been FF for since December and she will not be 1 until May! i told her that she needs to be RF until at least 2 years old and she basically laughed in my face! it drives me INSANE when people do not take the safety of their children seriously! i asked her why she HAS to FF already and she said because RF is "boring". so if you get in a crash and your child breaks your neck how FUN is that going to be?! mind you she has a 4 and 7 year old who don't sit in any kind of booster or anything, and she has another one due in August. :jaw: so that is 4 kids who will be riding in a car TOTALLY UNSAFE!!! how can she be SO STUPID?!!!

sorry...had to vent along with you :p
