Older child stroller

I have a friend of mine who has a 8 yr old disabled duaghter rather than using the wheelchair they would also like to have the option of a stroller.

Ive been looking all over the net and have found one but they want $400 odd Au dollars for it..

Does any one have any suggestions on how we may find a stroller that is a bigger than the norm.?

how big is the child? what is her disability?(does it include low muscle tone, ect)

I don't know if you could get it any cheaper, but I've seen this at the zoo and it looked awesome, not too 'special needsy', if they don't need a ton of support for her http://www.adaptivemall.com/mainbug.html

Thanks for the replies did you see the price for the Maclaren $465.95 ouch...
I didnt think it would be a big issue to find a stroller for part time use to be so much money compared to normal strollers.. But i guess thats what they will have to buy if they want one.

if the child has insurance covering the disability and can not walk or walk for very long, then the insurance might pay for one of the special needs strollers?

also check ebay, there are a few that are a hundred cheaper than that site.

The Dreamer Manhattan Delux has a weight limit of 100 lbs. It's not a special needs stroller, but if the child isn't especially heavy it will lst to approximate twelve-ish.

Dreamer Design has high weight limit strollers like the previous poster said but also makes mobility products. This stroller - http://www.dreamerdesign.net/axiom2.cfm - is designed for ages 5-10. I have no idea what the cost is though.

Pretty expensive! Here it is for over $1000.


Here is the Axiom 3.

There is also an adult version, the Axiom 4.


Although these are expensive, it is possible, as others have said, that insurance will pay for at least part of it.

The OP is in Austrailia, so I don't know how insurance would work there.

My nephew is almost 10 and special needs. They have a kool stride stroller that goes to 150 pounds for when they don't want to use the wheel chair. it was pricey, but sil and bil were able to connect with a special needs group that gives grants and help towards purchasing items to help with mobility of disabled children. Is there anything like that in Australia?
