built in booster in volvo??

**pics now posted***We just purchased a 92 volvo (top of the line model) with only 45K miles on it for my oldest dd. Upon checking it out on the inside I discovered a built in booster seat for kids (I think) 50-80lbs. But the built in belt guide kinda threw me. It positions the lap part of the belt waaay down on the childs upper thighs. Looks too far down to me to be considered in the proper position but even the picture they have on the seat showing it in use (a drawing) shows it way down on the kids legs. Are these built in boosters any good? Middle position by the way. And ds is not heavy enough to sit in it anyway.....that and I dont let him drive with her lol. I can take a pic after I get home from work if that helps anyone.

I was under the impression that it was supposed to sit on your upper thighs / lap, hence why it is a lap belt. If a seat belt is bone seeking, I would think the femur is the strongest bone in the body.

In the middle of the thighs would not be appropriate but I've never seen that. As a general rule we do prefer the lap belt on the lap -- parallel to the bottom seat cushion, rather than parallel to the belly. Being right on the hip bones is just barely in the correct position & can still result in submarining. I don't freak out if we've done everything we can & the lap belt is on the hip bones instead of the lap, but the lap is always my goal.

Interesting. We have a '94 Volvo w/ a built-in booster in the center. It doesn't have any belt guides and it positions the belt too high on DD's tummy. She's too light weight to use it though; 5 yrs and 36 lbs.

My sis had a volvo for a while but I don't believe it had belt guides. Maybe it was an older model. It actually fit my 7 year old pretty well. She never had reason to ride in it but she tried it out for me.

built in boosters (namely volvo ones as they are the typical makers of such things) are typically great... but about the belt fit... we need pics to give an opinion on that.

Avery is almost 6 and 42lbs (booster starts at 50lbs) Cuts him off at the neck but isnt the lap belt kinda far down? Need to see if I can bribe my 9yo to model for me

it's a little hard to tell because the pics are so small... but I think it's okay... I'd like it a little closer to the hips, but it's not bad...I'd try Molly in it... see if she fits better.

of course, the manual picture shows a (in my opinion only... for all I know it could be just fine safet-wise) worse fit... and I'm not sure if you are allowed to bypass the guides (as they would provide the false hips that armrests typically do on other backless boosters)

That's just about how my belt fits me, just a little bit further up, and with a larger kid, like a typical 50 lber, I'd think it would probably be fine.
