We will be traveling to see Dh's family, it is about a 2 day drive (10 hours the first day and 8 hours the second). So how do you keep your kids occupied and happy in the car that long? The girls are 3.5 and 1

Plan around nap times. Stop every 2-4 hours to stretch legs. And, the dvd player:)

I drive several times a year for 6+ hours alone with my kids. Started when DD was 7m and DS was 3yrs. This summer we've got at least 6 6+ hour drives. And neither of my kids nap anymore. I pack snacks and things like the small Doddle Pro but ultimately, it's videos that save the day.

Sing songs.
Listen to books on CD/MP3 (they can be soothing to the one-year-old).

Look at books they have never seen before.
Eat snacks.

We used to take LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGGGG trips when I was little and the above is what we did. My sister takes long trips with her kids, and the above is what they do. :)

At 1 he slept a lot in the car, snacks in snack trap, special car-only toys. We travelled 6 days from WA to TX at 13 months and had a bag full of toys in the car, plus I added a new toy everyday

Everything you don't let them do, let them do it in the car! My mom didn't let me and my bro have sugary cereals. Until we took a road trip one summer. I was only allowed to suck my thumb in bed. But I when my parents found out I was staying awake in the car cause I couldn't sleep without sucking my thumb they gave me permission to suck it in the car.
