Thinking about a new seat for my DN

DN is five years, two months old. She is of about average height and weight (I'm not positive how tall she is or how much she weighs... I *think* around 45-48 inches and around 45 pounds?), but has a fairly long torso. In my car, she rides in a harnessed Nautilus.

Last night, I had her in the seat several times over the course of a few hours. I noticed that she only has about 0.5 to 0.75" of harness height left to grow, so I know she has limited time left in that harness, but that it could take her a while still to grow that much torso.

The "issue" I have is that she is complaining that the crotch strap is too tight. I can see that she actually has PLENTY of space, but she feels it is too tight. She said, "Aunt ______, I think it is time for you to buy me a new carseat. This one is too small for me now."

I am certainly not in a rush to buy her a new seat, but I do want to start thinking about what is best for her.

In her parents' cars, she rides in Britax Regents. They are considering buying her and her brother Frontier 85s so that both kids ride in a Regent in one vehicle and both ride in a Frontier 85 in the other vehicle, but they haven't bought those yet.

I own a Recaro Vivo, a Graco Turbo Booster, a Britax Parkway SG, and an Evenflo Amp and am *considering* talking to my sister about, when R truly outgrows the Nautilus, using a booster (NOT the Amp, though) in my car.

Would this be stupid? To put a child R's age and size into a booster in my car? She will probably be 5.5 (to maybe 6) by that time. She is probably in my car about once a month, but the amount of time I have her with me is WAY higher over the summer, and could increase based on where they move.

Moving R to a booster would also free up the Nautilus for her three-year-old brother. He rides in a Radian XT in my car, but I can't get the wings to go any higher than they currently are AND I can't get the harness into the top slots. I'll start another thread about that issue. :p

Of course this all depends on the approval of my sister and BIL, but I am curious what you all think.

For me personally she would be too small for my liking, but if she fit well and could sit properly I don't think it would be stupid to use a booster.

Maybe during the summer you could get them to let you use a regent in the car and give them the nautilus for the younger child?

(also I wanted to make sure you saw that last dog food reply to you  lol! http://www.car-seat.org/showpost.php?p=1684587&postcount=30 just trying to be helpful ;) )

Thanks! I am hesitant about putting her in a booster, too. I am hoping I can distract her in the car enough to make her forget that she thinks the crotch strap is too tight. :p

Thanks for the post about Wilderness! I will look into it for my girl. :) I will need to buy food again pretty soon (it seems that I am ALWAYS buying food!), so I will look into it! Thanks!

I do feed her *some* raw foods (like pumpkin in the fall :)), but I am not sure I can do raw meat. It is hard enough for me to feed her dry food (I gag from the smell of meat everytime I feed her), and I am afraid I would totally lose my lunch if I tried raw meat. I know... I should get over myself.

Any other thoughts? I need support to either buy another seat or to feel okay about boostering her. :) :p

Thanks!

it's not stupid at all... with that little harness space, I'd want to have a chance to see what they want to do when she outgrows it... and then have her ride in a booster once or twice to see how she's going to do.

However, since her parents clearly want to keep her harnessed in their cars, I would definitely suggest when Luvbug did about switching the nauti with a Regent.

from my perspective as a mom, it would depend on budget, and also on how often she's in your car... but on the other hand, I also think all 5yr olds need to be able to know how to ride in a booster in the case of a true emergency situation where they need to.

How does she do in a booster? At over 5 and over 40 lbs, if she was able to sit properly in a booster seat for rides, I would be hesitant to drop 2-300 on another harnessed seat for once a month use. If she is able to do the booster, I would go with that option.

My daughter is 5.5 years old, right around 40 lbs clothed (depending on what she wears....summer time she does weigh less because no boots, etc....38 lbs with nothing but shorts and tee on) and we've been booster training with her for short rides (ie: emergency situations where Grandma or Grandpa would have to get, etc...).

I'm not a whole lot of help because I'm still having a hard time boostering my 6y10m old daughter:eek: but if her parents are okay with it and she sits properly, she should be okay :)
