Good, economical infant seat?

We've got some friends who are expecting a baby in May and who are also really struggling financially right now. She just called to ask about expiration dates, as she found a used travel system on the local classifieds. I suggested that she not pursue it, as she has no way to know the history of the seat and it will expire in December anyway.

We'd really like to help them out and purchase a new seat for them. We're hoping to keep it around $100, but could possibly go higher if another friend we've invited to pitch in decides to help out.

I'm not sure on specifics with their car situation....they have been juggling cars with her parents a bit while they try to get into a position financially to be a bit more stable. I think they are currently driving an older Dodge Caravan. I can find out more if it makes a big difference on recommendations. I do know that one of the cars they've driven has a seatbelt in the back that no longer ratchets back in when pulled all the way out (not sure if they're still driving that car anymore). Will a base with a lock-off make that seating position usable?

I would say an onboard35...it has the tallest shell height of any infant seat out there right now so it'll last the longest...plus it has the lowest slot height for itty bitty babies
I bought this for a friend's baby shower a couple of weeks ago...i got it on clearance at safety1st.com but its not on clearance anymore

its on overstock for $79

Might I add that it is a really pretty color its more bright teal and brown. She loved it and we compared it side by side with a SR22 and there was a ton of difference...also this one has an adjustable foot as some don't

If you know they might be installing the seat in that position, I would go with a SR35 so you have the lock-offs on the base. After using the OB35 for almost 8 months now, I really don't like it.

The Combi Shuttle 33 has lock offs on the base as well. I got mine for $104 on diapers.com while on sale, plus a first time customer coupon. It's very tall. It isn't as simple to use as a Snugride would be though, plus has a puzzle buckle. But I thought I'd throw it out there to mention the lock offs.

wouldn't they be able to use a locking clip in that seating position? what about the comfy carry by safety first?

Yeah, I'm sure a locking clip could be used. But, I want it to be as easy as possible for the wife....she's not very strong and has a hard time getting a good install in general (she is getting better at it though ;)). I figure if I can get something in our budget with lockoffs, that might be a bit easier. I know that I dread having to install with a locking clip....it's just more complicated.

The onboard 35 was my initial thought. It seems like I remember reading that some of their bases have a lock-off and some don't....can anyone clarify that?
