Question being asked. I have no idea how to answer and an courious myself.

If someone slams you from the back end of your vehicle and your child is in a rear facing carseat then the same thing will happen right?

Kind of, but no. Generally in a frontal impact, BOTH cars are moving forward when they hit, whereas in a rear-end crash, only one car is moving forward. Unless they have a knack for driving in reverse ... :p

And the statistics say that rear impacts are much less common than the more damaging and life threatening crashes.

ID like to add only 4% of accidents are rear enders (is that a word?) and they are not as severe cuase when someone rear ends you, your car is pushed forward, but when you are hit head on your car comes to a dead stop. Hope that made sense!

Unless there's ALSO a car in FRONT of you, as there was when my DH was rear ended. See thread: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=97033

However, that crash was probably unsurvivable for any occupants of the back seat (car seat was unoccupied)

Yes, if you are hit from behind, your child is safer forward facing. They are also safer in the front seat if being hit from behind. So the day you know you will be hit from behind ;), put them forward facing in front. Every other day, they are safer rear facing in the back seat. As PP said, only 4% are rear crashes.

Don't forget that in every rear end crash, there is also a frontal collision. The car on front gets rear ended, but the car in back experiences a frontal.

Everything we do is about minimizing risk. Protect against the statistically most likely scenarios (frontal and front offset) and the deadliest (again, frontal and front offset).

This is nitpicky (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), but I believe it's 4% of serious (or fatal?) crashes that are from the rear.

Fender-benders are relatively common, but also generally not serious.

Most FF people who are whacked from behind suffer some degree of whiplash, if you're RF, your head moves down and forward, in a more natural motion than up and back, and you won't be in as much neck pain. (Not talking deadly crashes, since the data say kids are safer RF in ALL crash types, but just the usual bumper tappers... barely crawling on the freeway and being bumper tapped even with a headrest behind me left me in pain for weeks once!)
Rearenders are also my reason for using seats with anti-rebound protection (Britax and Radians tethered, True Fit Premier with the anti-rebound bar).
