Should I switch Bear's seat for the day of his surgery ?

I'm wondering what you would do.

Bear currently rides in a Regal Ride, rear-facing of course.

He isn't tall enough yet to move the straps up to the second slot, but the lowest ones are so far down that it rather smooshes him. He doesn't like it, but there really isn't anything we can do about it at this point.

I still have Bug's Marathon here, it's not being used at all, because I can't work it into a 3-across in our car.

But, next month, when Bear has his surgery, I'm thinking of taking out all three seats and using the Marathon for the day. It just seems like it would be more comfortable for him that day.

And it'll just be me and Bear that day - Hubby is taking the day off to stay home with the big kids - so I don't need all three seats in.

And, god forbid, should something unforeseen happen that requires DH to come to the hospital - he'll have the big kids seats at home to use.

99% sure I'm over thinking this, in part because I'm totally stressing over this surgery, and in part because I totally HATE the Regal Ride.

So - what would YOU do ?

Umm - Bear will be 6 months old, about 22lbs and 29" at the point I'm talking about.

He is big enough. It will cause less stress on you, which in turn will cause less stress on him. Switch.

Yeah, I'd go ahead and switch too...why not? If you can, I say do it. Whatever works. Whatever's comfiest/best.

I kept meaning to ask about Bear. I hadn't heard final word on whether surgery was in fact needed or not.

Keep us up to date would ya? ;)

Sorry about that.

The surgery is, in fact, needed. His misguided testicle is located in his perineum as best we can tell. Behind and below where it was meant to go.

He goes in on June 15th, and we should be home the same day as long as there aren't any complications.

The hospital is a little more than an hour away from home.

We need to be there at 6:30 am.

And he's not allowed to nurse for 8 hours prior to his surgery (7:45 am) - that is NOT going to be fun, as he is exclusively breastfed.

Kashi, I just want to say that when DD was 4 months old and EBF, she had a GI procedure done to rule something out and she wasn't supposed to nurse for 6-7 hours before hand and not only was she so fussy and miserable, she wouldn't take their nasty barium crud in the bottle because "hello?!?!?!?this kid hates bottles and has never taken one!!" They couldn't seem to wrap their head around that one, either, But, when I got her back, she nursed like she hadn't eaten in days and was smiling at me within minutes again. Thank goodness they forget all this stuff that's done to them!

Good luck with little Bear, and of course, take the MA, it makes complete sense.

Definitely, I moved Ali into her Marathon from her infant seat for her surgery when she was 6 months old. That way she was a little more comfortable, had more room ect. It made it easier on everyone.

HOW do you safely put a small infant rear-facing in a Marathon ? These are taken with the straps on the lowest setting, and Bear is anything BUT small.

For Joshua's surgery, I took Pacey's seat out completely and left it at home. I did that so I could put Joshua's seat in the middle and recline it a bit more AND there would be room to sit next to him for the ride.

I would go ahead and switch him for the ride to make sure he's as comfortable as possible.

Oh and as long as the slots aren't more than 1 inch above his shoulders (and they look like they're just slightly above), I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just make sure you get his harness really snug and his chestclip at armpit level...as you already know...and he'll be fine!

Nothing more to add other than my best wishes for Bear and the surgery. Oh, thought of one thing, if surgery is still a month away who knows how much he might grow.

I'd also double check with the hospital about no breastmilk for 8 hrs thing. Usually they have different rules for ebf babies. When my dd was put under, she was allowed to nurse up to 4 hrs before the procedure, but if she was ff she would've had to have been 6 hrs NPO. So, since you have a month before the procedure, I'd check into that some more.. might make it easier on the both of you in that aspect. Jack Newman is in the Toronto area and he's a pediatrician, LC and very knowledgeable about bf'ing, he'd be the person I'd look to for advice and he'd probably even contact the dr.'s doing the surgery if there was room for movement with how long Bear had to fast.

As for the car seat, I'd check the harness height with it actually installed in the car because that can make a difference. But in one month he may gain as much as an inch in torso, so you just never know. But it looks like he'd be ok now. Oh, and did you stick your finger through the cover to feel where the actual slots in the seat shell are? On our marathon the slots are a good 1/2" lower than where the cover sits, so that could make a difference too.

I'm sure Bear will breeze through it. Many hugs to you guys as you prepare, I know how anxious you must be feeling the closer you get, but everything will be fine.

p.s. What kind of diaper is he in? I can't identify it from the pic...lol.

The paperwork from the hospital specifically states no breastmilk for 8 hours pre-surgery.

I haven't contacted Dr. Newman yet about it - I don't want to be a total PITA and have the surgical staff all pissy at me, so I need to find a way to be pleasant when I ask for an exception to be made.

The slots on the shell are slightly below where the slots in the cover are on the Marathon - 1/2" sounds about right.

He was in a prefold, snappid, with a CuddleWool cover over it - that is the pink you can see in the one photo.

Yes, his eyes are stunning.

I would totally feel comfortable with his height in a MA. Britax allows up to an inch (I dont know if I would allow a full inch though) but he seems right about where aleah is when the seat is uninstalled. Once I install the seat, she is just a smidge over that first slot. And like the op's said, hes sure to grow within the next month.

Gorgeous baby.
