Ugh! I've been meaning to read that all day but I forgot to check when I was on my computer and the Washington Post keeps crashing my iPod.

This is the story Darren contributed some info to.

It's very hard to develop a good dummy for children. Adult cadavers are used by some labs to help refine the process for the adult crash test dummies. We're not going to see the same development for child crash test dummies.

Seats for children who weigh more than 65 pounds — a growing part of the car seat market, partly because of the increase in childhood obesity — are not held to any government safety requirements.
Over 65 pounds, seats don't have to meet the same injury measures that they do at lower weights. However, they are still crash tested, and still must meet structural and other safety requirements. To say that they are not held to any government safety requirements is patently false.

They re-ran this on the cover of my local paper this morning...

The article was good for what it is, but for a "general" audience out of context it seems to create more uncertainty in people's minds about CR's. I wish there was just one more passage in there about best practices... because we DO know what those are at this point.

I was actually very disappointed in the article, but more from technical journalistic standpoints. Frankly, I found it very sloppy and not in any way impressive.

The video alongside the story of the tech talking about two Dads that came to thank her after their cars were totaled but the kids were safe in their properly-installed seats (that she had helped them with) is a good one for techs - or people thinking of becoming techs - to watch.

"That's why we do what we do."

Yes indeed.
