Question about the CPST Course

Hi - I already embarassed myself by offering to bring any of my 12 seats (and I actually listed the seat categories) to my tech class - I don't want to repeat and sound like a super eager beaver.

So - they sent my textbook in the mail. Should I have it read prior to the class? I assume so because it is pretty lengthy and it would be difficult to read following the class.

Just checking. Thanks.

We went page by page through the book during our class. We didn't receive ours until we arrived at our class. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it unless you want to read up first.

I didn't get my book until the day of class and really, I found that it was a lot of the same information on stuff I already knew. I learned a lot from this board before deciding to take the course!

You pretty much go through it during class. IIRC, the info in the book was kind of like the handouts to the PowerPoint they'll use.

You could read it ahead of time, but you really don't need to. And when I say "you," I mean YOU (and any other regulars here).

This.

I found that I knew most of the info as we went through it. The hands on skills were the most valuable for me (and probably most of the other c-s.org'rs that have taken it)

I did have an opportunity to use my seats though.

- I had my DH bring my kids to the check up event :D

Someone posted a link to the 2007 manual. I read the first part because it was stuff I didn't already have memorized. Then I skimmed through the rest. I'm sure you don't need to read the manual, but I couldn't help myself. I'm going to try to act less excited in class. We'll see how it goes, though:)

Oh, don't read it or you'll be SO bored in class. Even though you already know the info, if you know the info AND how the book has everything worded AND you've already found the places where it's not very precise about something... you'll fall asleep in class. "Wake me up when we go do the hands-on activities, okay?" ;)

One thing to remember - the info is very specifically designed to introduce concepts in a specific pattern, to reduce confusion. So every time you find yourself raising your hand to say "But wait, what about this really obvious exception that really needs to be mentioned?" just wait - it'll be covered in the next chapter. :p

So true. I found myself biting my tongue a lot. There were only 2 times where I let the instructor know they were incorrect (politely of course). When one of the instructors said seats w/ anti rebound were not sold in the US & didn't understand why they were mentioned in the text & then when the same instructor said age doesn't play a factor in seat choices at all (except for the under 1 issue).

So far, my class is pretty good:) One thing that bugged me was that one lady said she had an 8 year old riding in a lap-only belt. The next younger kid is 5 and in a booster. The tech told her (jokingly) to pick which kid she likes the least. He could have talked to her afterward about hwh seats. Judging from the size of mom, I'd bet the 5 year old would have years in a frontier85. Plus there are the ride safe vests and the 86y harness. There are options if there's a way to come up with the funds needed. It's not a lost cause.
