Oh please help! My SIL finally came back from China with my 3 new baby Carriers she had handmade for me, but I can't figure them out.

Do you know how to use these? The blue one I think is a Podaegi, so I think I have that one figured out. The other two are just odd though....

Also, they came with 2 apprx. 10feet long straps???

TIA!

They look like a version of the asian baby carrier

I've never seen them with straps that weren't attached though.

Some of the Hmong grammas here use carriers that are just a fabric with long straps wrapped around and around.

The one with the attached straps definitely looks like a Podegi type carrier to me but the other one is new to me. However, I bet you could tie it like a mei tai with one of the straps-start with the cloth on your front and wrap the strap over it in front, cross in back, put baby facing you above the strap with a leg on either side of the cloth, then cross in front over the baby and tie under their bum. You can experiment with variations on that general theme, like not crossing the strap over baby and just tying under their bum. Or using one strap around the waist and using the other to to do the cross in front and back.

I don't know if you have ever seen the Peppermint baby carriers website but they have been around a long time and seem to have a lot of info about baby wearing. Maybe you could contact them and ask if they know what it is? There's a contact box on their front page.

It's cool to see a traditional Chinese carrier, thanks for sharing!

I agree they look like Meitai's without the ties attached... Maybe you could get her to sew the straps on to the cloth if that would make you more comfortable.. They are really beautiful!

Her sister had them made for her, her sister didn't make them. No advice other than that.

They're so beautiful! I agree; the last one is a podaegi, and I've seen the first one used in Japan when we lived there as well, although I don't know what it's called or how to use it exactly. It may be similar to Sara's Ride, with the thicker parts of the straps creating the "butt hammock", for lack of a better term.

The middle one just looks like a strapless podaegi, and I found a web page describing how to use it in the simplest carry--- just wrap it around baby (behind knees up to top of back), drape baby & cloth over your back, and tie in a square knot around your front. Page w/ instructions

Have fun with your new carriers! I'm jealous-- my "baby" is 3 now, and my babywearing days are fast coming to a close! :(

Yes, my sister-in-law had a Chinese local in China make them for me. My SIL is a teacher in China, and has made many local friends there.

I am still confused about what to do with the 10 foot straps?? I searched the internet all last night, and can't find any carriers that have detached straps like that.

Thanks for all your help, Melissa :)

The one that looks like a very long scarf almost looks like you would wear it sort of like a baby bjorn. How do I explain what I mean?! Umm, If you cross the straps across your back, you could then kind of tie the baby to your front. make any sence? hard to explain.

weird! I know Ive seen photos of native women/girls using only straing to carry the baby- not comfortable looking at all but I figure it was all they had. One pic of what looked like a 4yo girl carrying what looked like a 10mo baby, so cute! dont know how she did it though lol!

Weird is exactly right! I have seen some kids worn in China as well that look very uncomfortable LOL!

No help as to their identification but dang...those are gorgeous!!!

I'd gladly experiment with them :D

Definitely take the pics to the other forums mentioned. I know the babywearers forum rocks!

Be sure to post back when you have some answers.

I know I've seen things 'similar' but, I'm no baby carrier aficionado. Found the MT, made my own and called it good. I just drool over some of the others.

Ok, rambling...but man oh man those things of yours look dreamy!
