I found this today on the FAA site i thought it was a usefull link to post here, also note the flyer you can print out to take with you..! Or print out and give to others..

http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

I would love to see a heap at airports so parents could read them, as if the airlines would allow that.!

I found this part interesting
Ask your airline if they can provide a CRS for your child. If so, you may not be permitted to bring your own CRS on board, and may need to check it as baggage.

There doesnt seem to be many options for older kids on planes :(

Yes, I hand these out to parents who travel + I've always kept a copy on me to present to the flight attendants :) (One did try to tell me I couldn't use an FAA approved carseat for my then 3 year old)

It really is fine for a 40# 4 year old to use just the lap belt on the plane -- because the safety issue is not so much crashing, but turbulance.... So long as the child is big enough to fit the lap belt & stay seated they're at least as safe as the adults in a crash: hand held infants/toddlers are a huge concern during both turbulence + crash, though, as they become projectiles > see the Sioux City crash video thread.
