Was that the one where they had a platform with airline seats bolted to it, and then they dropped it while they were seated in them? I always wondered why they can't just put a huge parachute in planes, then the pilot could deploy it in an emergency and float down to earth! I guess there is just way to much force involved to actually do this, but I bet if you threw enough money into development, someone could come up with a way to do it.

The shuttle is like a rock gliding down to earth....it is amazing how they fly that thing!

I think the problem with the plane during a crash is that they are trying to compensate for unequal forces...so it is a battle to keep it level...without being level the shute idea would not do anything? Read some pilot accounts of what they go through when flying a plane in trouble if you get a chance.

This Mythbusters show also covered the driving test, with cell phone and then while legally too drunk to drive.

hey, it worked for apollo, right? but i'm guessing a commercial airliner weighs about 2 or 3 orders of magnitude more than apollo did. so that would have to be one heck of a big parachute!

Yeh, I'm sure it wouldn't be cost effective considering that planes are still the safest way to travel commercially.

There is actually a parachute deployment canister for some smaller model private planes, cessnas and the like, but it is still experimental.
