Frontier 85 tether question

A friend in the neighborhood is considering buying a Frontier 85 for her 4 year old. The primary car that it will be in has a top tether anchor in the seating positions she'll have it in, but the second car that it will occasionally be in (grandma's) does not have enough top tethers to go around for the seats that are installed for other grandkids. I *thought* that I read somewhere that it requires a top tether only after the child is over 65 lbs.....but of course, I can't find where I read that, so now I'm doubting that it was in reference to this seat. Is the top tether required at all times when the seat is in harness mode? Since the other seats in grandma's car are placed in convenient seating positions for grandma to get to the kids (she watches those grandkids daily), she doesn't want a seat that will require things to be shuffled around every time her daughter is with grandma. Her daughter will be in booster mode long before she reaches 65 lbs., so if it's not required, she wants to go with that option.

You heard/read correctly. :) While it's recommend to use the top tether in harnessed mode at any weight to reduce head excursion, the Frontier85 (and its earlier predecessor model, the Frontier/Frontier80) requires using the top tether in harnessed mode at 65 lbs. and up.

You're correct, it's required only after 65 pounds.

If grandma will take her fairly often, why not something like an Evenflo Maestro if she's light enough? It's narrower, more lightweight, inexpensive, and can stay in the car.

She is fairly petite, so I'll suggest the the Maestro to her. Grandma only has her once or twice a month and doesn't usually drive when she's got her, so it's a pretty occasional need. She may really like the idea of the Maestro to just keep in grandma's car.

I'm glad I wasn't nuts about the weight thing though! I'm hoping she gets the Frontier so that I can play with it in *my* car!
