Keyfit newborn insert?

We got the travel system that our friend was giving us. The car seat (keyfit22) was filthy, so I took everything off and washed it and it looks like new! I called Chicco and ordered new straps and a buckle ($40) The only thing missing is the newborn insert, does it really need it? I kind of would like to have it just to support the baby better....

It is not necessary, but I feel it does make a difference.

Ds about 12 days old, about 8lbs 8oz, 22.75 inches.

If you decide not to use it, then I would also remove the headrest, and use rolled receiving blankets to keep the head up.

Awww! He definately looks like he fits better with it. They didnt have the insert or the headrest, and now I def want it! Ds was 8 lbs 4 oz 20 1/4 inches and dd was 7 lbs 4 oz 20 1/4 inches but much more petite than ds was (she wore newborn diapers till 3 months) I am guessing this one will be about the same as they were.
I looked on ebay and nobody is selling it! :(
