Can someone explain why CR is a bad place to go for car seat recomendations so I can pass the info on to a friend. I do not trust CR but my friend does and I don't want to sound pushy....thanks!

If you do a search here for Consumer Reports you'll find lots of threads. I can't link right now or I'd find some for you.

The short of it: A few years ago, CR published a Kia of seats, and it later turned out that there was a mistake in their testing. Some tests were run at speeds much faster than others, and much faster (more severe) than what seats are certified at and what is considered survivable. That means they weren't comparing apples to apples. They eventually retracted the whole report.

Then a year or so ago they came out with a recommendation against a certain seat but it turns out they had not followed manufacturer instructions when installing it. I don't believe they retracted that one.

Even without those flaws, car seats are not a one-size-fits-all issue. A seat that CR thinks is great might not fit well in a person's car, or might not fit a larger/smaller child well, or might be good for meeing the recommended minimums but not for best practice.

There is no way they can take individual circumstances into account, and with car seats, that's really what matters.

When was the last time CR came out with a list anyway? It's hard to keep up with all the new seas comin out constantly.
