Is the CA65 worth the extra money?

Will I really need the extra 15 pounds for ff? DS1 is 27 months and 25 lbs. He's not especially tall either, about 25th percentile for weight and height. Do you think we could get by with just the 50 lb version?

Hmm... it's so hard to look that far in the future. I have a boy who is 95% height, 60% weight, so fairly skinny and big for his age. He's 50lbs and would probably be about outgrowing the CA by height. So... if he were a bit stockier or even average he would have needed the higher weight. BUT if you expect your child to stay on that growth curve, he'll likely be in a booster long before 50lbs.

Since you have a younger child, you could get the regular one and anticipate passing it down later if needed. By that time there will likely be other Frontier-like FF combo seats for a reasonable price.

ETA: 50lbs is 25th percentile for a nearly-8yo (not that you can count on him staying on that curve, but maybe give you an idea).
