Extended Rear-Facing Car seat which one to get

Hi,
We are in the market for a new convertible car seat for my son and all the different types are a little overwhelming! I would like to keep him rear-facing until at least 3, which i'm hoping will be possible. He is 13 months old and at his 12 month visit he was 28lbs, 32 inches tall. We currently are using a Britax roundabout 50 that we received as a gift. I am thinking about the TF. What would you recommend? We currently drive a Ford Focus, and a Kia Spectra. We will be buying a SUV sometime next year so we might just hold off and buy the convertible when we get the SUV if it is something that wouldn't fit well in our current cars.

with him already 28lbs, I'd think of putting the RA 50 as a spare seat and get him a seat that rfs to at least 40lbs... the Graco Myride, Evenflo Triumph 65/Momentum, the Radian seats, the Safety 1st Complete Air are the ones I'd look at.

I'd actually avoid the True Fit if your rear-facing goal is at least 3 years old. Since your son is already 28 pounds at 13 months old, I don't think the 35 pound rear-facing weight limit of the True Fit will necessarily be high enough to help you reach that goal of 3 years old.

While all kids gain weight differently and it's possible that he might gain less than 7 pounds over the next 2 years, I'd want the 40 pound rear-facing weight limit of the Graco My Ride, Evenflo Triumph 65 or Momentum, the Safety 1st Complete Air, or one of the Sunshine Kids Radian seats (some of the Radians rear-face to 40 pounds, others to 45 pounds) just in case. The Radians can take up a lot of room front-to-back in some cars, so that's something to keep in mind when researching these seats. I have a My Ride and a Radian for my rear-facing 3 year old, and they both have different pros and cons.

You could also keep him in the Roundabout 50 until he outgrows it rear-facing. That might last you until 3 (it has a 35 pound rear-facing weight limit like the True Fit), but even if it only gets you until 2 or so, there might be some newer convertible seats on the market by then for you to research. New seats are released all the time, so if the Roundabout 50 is working for you for now, waiting until it's outgrown rear-facing might make sense especially if you plan on buying a new vehicle where car seats might fit differently than in your current one. :twocents:

For a 28 pound 12 month old I'd go for something with a rear facing limit higher than 35 pounds if you want to make it to three, just to be on the safe side.

I'd look at the Sunshine Kids Radians, Safety 1st Complete Air, Evenflo Triumph 65, and if he has a short torso you can look at the Graco My Ride and the new Britaxes.

Is he walking yet? My DD totally slowed her weight gain when she started walking. I might just use the seat you have til he hits the limit and see how he's doing height/ weight wise when you get closer. My DD has not gained a full pound in 3 months since she started walking.

Also as the others said a really cool new seat could come out before he outgrows the current one.

If you like the way the Roundabout 50 is working for now... I second the opinion to keep it until he out grows it and see what fun new seats are on the market then.

It's a great seat - installs upright for rear facing, great harness, tall shell (not the tallest but absolutely tall enough for a 13mo old), fashionable etc.

MoonRocket, He's been walking for about 2 months now so i'm sure he'll slow down weight wise.
We were planning on getting another seat to use for our other car, so I figured why not make the new seat one that will last longer, and use the Britax as our second seat until he outgrows it. I'm sure he'll make it to 2 in that seat.
