Exclamation Drop Side Cribs banned (US only)

"The government outlawed drop-side cribs on Wednesday after the deaths of more than 30 infants and toddlers in the past decade and millions of recalls.

It was a unanimous vote by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban the manufacture, sale and resale of the cribs, which have a side rail that moves up and down, allowing parents to more easily lift their child from the crib.

The new standard requiring cribs to have fixed sides would take effect in June."

It's about time. Ikea has had the right idea all along- just make the entire crib lower so you dont need a latter to get your kid in and out!

So, I currently own 2 kids that have drop sides but they have the *fix* pieces on them that make it impossible to move the side. Can I not sell those now? I'm still using them now but we'll be done with them in the next 6 months.

I could not be happier!!!!!! My DD2 almost died when the side popped off our crib and she was being strangled. If my DH hadn't walked when he did she would not be here today. That crib was immediatly taken down and burned in our fire pit. Everytime i see one it makes me sick to my stomach to think of what could have happened.

I don't think it's ever been legal to sell your kids, drop side or not.

Re: Drop Side Cribs banned (US only)

I think it is a stupid blanket ban. The issue is crib makers using cheap plastic hardware...how about we ban that...not dropside cribs all together.

30 deaths over 10 years...come on...how about working on the number one death of children good ole government.

Re: Drop Side Cribs banned (US only)

So, I called my crib's manufacturer (sold at JCP- forgot who actually made it) and they said mine was not under recall. Will this change anything now? Will they have to send me a fix-kit or does this just get them out of it and they just can't make or sell any going forward?

If your crib cannot be re-sold, that effectively put it as a "recalled" item.

Else you can call CPSC if your crib manufacturer is not willing to do anything.

"Toll-free Consumer Hotline: 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054). Call to obtain product safety and other agency information and to report unsafe products. Hotline staff may be reached from 8:00 am - 5:30 pm ET. "

ETA: I meant an item that cannot be re-sold due to being a safety hazard should ethically be treated as a "recalled" item.

Just because an item can't be re-sold doesn't mean it's recalled.

I dont think you would find this "stupid" if one of these cribs almost strangled your child. I dont care what it takes to get these death traps of the market!

Re: Drop Side Cribs banned (US only)

I agree that the real issue is shoddy construction. A perfect example is the somewhat recent Simplicity recall for the mattress support...this was for all styles of their cribs, not just the drop-side ones. I'm in no way taking away from the precious children that lost their lives...but I think the more effective approach is to go after the real root of the problem.

That may be true and if it helps I did have a crib that was part of a major recall and before it was recalled it did break and could have seriously injured my child.

There are approximately 1 million cribs sold each year. So over ten years with only 30 deaths that is 0.000003%. I don't live in fear of statistics like that.

With them being concerned with statistics like that, I am expecting to see backyard pools banned next.

You dont have to live in fear of statistics like that, but i dont think it's right to call it stupid either. I'm sure there are many more that were close calls just as we had. We were very lucky we walked in the room when we did, otherwise our child would have been added to that number. You have no idea what it's like to walk in and see your child blue cause their neck was being strangled by their crib. I'm sure all those other families would not find this recall stupid either. They sure recall things for a lot less than a child's death these days. Anything that takes a childs life should not be taken lightly at all.

Ok that's like comparing apples to oranges, totally not the same thing. Of course backyard pools can be dangerous, any amount of water over an inch can be a drowning hazard, your childs crib should not be able to kill them. You should never have to wonder when you put them to bed if they will be strangled in the morning.

No, I still think it is stupid. As I stated before *drop side cribs* are NOT the issue. The issue is manufacturers cutting corners and using cheap plastic hardware in place of metal hardware. We need manufacturing standard here. Do I think it is good to do something about it...of course. But a blanket ban done by the government...stupid.
