OT: Computer Hangs at Shutdown

Grr. It's not my computer, it's my mothers computer.

So far, all the fixes I've tried haven't worked at all. Short of ..oh...throwing it out the window. (Or ya know...reformatting. lol)

It's a windows pc, she's running xp sevice pack 2, I'm trying to figure out what she's installed recently that could have screwed the thing up.

Right now, I'm just frustrated.

right, it could very well be some third-party app that's causing it, or it might also just need to have a disk repair utility run on it... isn't there some way to do a disk check upon startup by holding down a key combination? i know how to do it on a mac and on unix, but not on windows.

Don't you just hate when that happens, then when you reboot, Windows comes up and says "Windows was not shut-down properly, if you don't want to see this message in the future, always shut down Windows properly" (or something along those lines). That burns me up more than anything!

Anyhow, I would guess some application is causing it (like Southpaw mentioned). If she installed any new software or updates recently, you may want to unistall, retry shut-down, then reinstall again, and check again. Also, on boot, press and hold F8 to go into safe mode. Try shutting down in safe-mode and see if it still hangs. I'm seriously considering a Mac for my next computer.

is she getting an error message that you see? Is it the Dwwin.exe DLL? I've heard that common on shut down. I had the problem for awhile. It's Microsofts reporting software. It can be shut off in the msconfig.

No error messages. Just....it goes to shut down and it sticks on the "windows is shutting down" screen.

I've given up.

For right now. lol

Thanks for the info though, Melizerd. I'm going to go and fiddle. Maybe the machine will self destruct and when I call tech support and tell them "oh, no, I didn't do aaaaaaaaaaaaanything...honest"....they won't kill me through the phone. You think? lol

ETA: I did one of those..."restore system to an earlier point" thingies...She'd said she'd tried to do it, but for whatever reason it didn't work. I did it. And...then after it reloaded and everything... shut it down. And it shut down! Yay.

(Yes. I know, "thingy" isn't proper terminology. lol)
