I'm just curious if anyone here has made the decision to use an aftermarket cover on their child's safety seat.

I *thought* that Brtiax used to allow them a couple years ago, but I can't find where on their site I thought I'd read that, so I'm sure they've since changed their minds/or I am remembering incorrectly.

I would never have a cover made for my seats to replace the original cover or buy one for that purpose. I did use a jolly jumper cuddle bag in my infant seat. I cut out the back part by the harness straps so it would fit better, so I might use it again if I needed too. I also had a shower cap cover, although that doesn't affect the use of the seat!

Yeah, I just found a REALLY cute one on Ebay while searching for a girly replacement cover (preferably in Tiffany, but you know how Ebay searches go, more than what you search for comes up), and hubby is convinced that they are okay, and that the seat manufacturer's are just trying to "corner the market and force you to buy a cover from them, and that it's just a cover and I can't see how it could interfere with the harness"

Anyone know why Britax doesn't sell the Tiffany cover as a replacement?

Even before i knew they were a big no-no, i didn't use one. I used to make hubby so mad because i would buy a carseat and then in a few months i would find a different pattern that i liked so of course i would buy that seat, lol!

It isn't just a harness issue, it's a flame retardent issue, a padding issue, a fit issue.

I could whip something up right here (and I'm pretty talented w/ a sewing machine, if I do say so myself) but there's no guarantee the slots are going to be in the right places to allow the harness to fit properly, the padding might be different, the seat won't be flame retardent...

It's just not cool.

They never put it on their site, but a few of us called them and they said it was fine  So then my friend bought one, and it was *junk*... the quality was super bad (I don't recall the seller, though)

I made two carseat covers. One for a friend who wanted john deere on her carseat. It was an old evenflo I think. I would never make one now. The other was on an OHS tourvia that a friend gave me. The cover was disgusting, caked on soda, juice, fries.... I happily made a new one. Of course this was all before I became educated...

Now I wouldn't make them for myself or others. I am happy to report both my son and my friends son lived to tell they tale.

In 1998-1999 or so, I had an Osh Kosh after-market cover on my Evenflo Medallion V. It was a really bad fit and ugly.

Then, in 1999-2000, I had a cute navy "sailor suit" cover on my Century SmartFit Plus infant seat. It was super-cute, but very bad to use.

NOW, there is no way I would use an after-market cover. NOW I know better!!

I spoke with them this morning, and they told me they do not sell it as a replacement cover.

ETA: Because I'm a nerd, and didn't realize that they never made Tiffany covers for the Marathon seats. DOH!

I have in the past. My SD's old combination seat (the horrible kind with the manual tether adjuster & metal plate in the back that so many people ended up just tying the harness around instead of figuring out properly!) wasn't expired yet but the dogs had totally mangled the cover  I had just found this forum & bought Leila's Wizard + Husky -- had no $ left (was washing our clothes in the tub I was so poor *SIGH*) but wanted my SD at back in a seat in my car even though her mom wasn't using one (she was only 5 years old then). I tried stitching the cover back together, but it wasn't working (it was already threadbare because mom washed it so often after leaving it outside in all kinds of weather: another bad thing, but she wasn't willing to buy a booster seat). So, I did the best I could at the time & sewed a scrap of fleece onto the original cover. This was only a temporary solution which my SD only used twice. It was better than nothing, but if I hadn't already sold a futon to buy Leila's seats I would have figured out a better solution! I would certainly not do that today....
