A Car Seat Mystery

What do you think that companies like Evenflo do when they have inventory or their retailers (target, sears, etc.) have inventory of recalled, but fixable seats.

Do they sell them as program seats at a discount with the repair kit included? Do they just destroy them? It would seem like a waste to destroy them because, in the instance of the Maestro, even if you don't like the recall fix, it could still be a high back booster.

Just curious if anyone knows the answer.

No idea- there used to be an evenflo factory that actually made carseats right behind one of the fire stations in my department but it's now closed down. Wish I could have seen it in action! Hopefully someone will know the answer. I would think it depends on the problem and how fixable it is. Haven't seen a lot of seats come through our program that had recalls/needed repairs initially (before being given out).

Sometimes the seats get sent back to the manufacturer where they are "fixed" at the factory and then new DOM labels are slapped on them (or placed over the original label). If the seat has a new DOM label that is outside of the recall period then it isn't recalled anymore . Yes, this means that the consumer is unknowingly purchasing a "refurbished" product. I don't think that's particularly ethical but it's been known to happen that way.

I have a Signo that's DOM is within the recall period and it came fix in an unopened box. The manual has a sticker in the removal of the cover section pertaining to the fix.
