What is up with the LATCH set up in this car?

My friend just bought this vehicle today. She is due in 4 weeks and came over to show me her new ride and so I could help her install her Baby Trend infant seat. I guess it has what you would call off set latch? I read her manual and it looks like you could install in any of three latch positions but if using the out board latch it is several inches away from the door. So basically making the middle seat pretty much useless. I told her we could install with seat belt so she could fit someone in the middle or we could install it center. She said no that's were she wanted it. We were able to get a good tight install but it just looks so weird.

What is the purpose of this off set latch?
