So confused about rear-facing limit on Britax Roundabout 55

We bought the Britax Roundabout 55 because we understood you could do rear-facing to 40 lbs. But the manual says up to 20 lbs OR 1 year! We have an 18 month old who's 26 lbs. Is it safe to put him rear-facing in this seat? We want to do extended rear-facing.

Thanks.

Hi. What the manual means is that for kids under age 1 or under 20 lbs., that carseat can only be used rear-facing. The maximum rear-facing weight limit is 40 lbs., so you can definitely use it rf to 40 lbs.

"Use only in a rear-facing position when using it with an infant
weighing less than 20 lbs (9.1 kg) OR is less than 1 year of age."

Well you can use it to 40 lbs as long as your kiddo has at least an inch of hard shell above their head.;)

Yes, it is very confusing wording. I noticed it on our Evenflo seat yesterday and can understand 100% how it can be interpretted incorrectly. What they are saying is that babies less than the 20lbs or 1 year must be rear facing but it comes out sounding that bigger kids can't. It is very safe to keep him rear facing in it, either until 40lbs or when his head is 1 inch from the top of the shell. Good for you for keeping him rear facing.

You are so not alone in misunderstanding that wording. Parents come through the clinics all the time after they looked at the stickers on the side of the seat, and interpreted it exactly the way you did.

But yes, they are saying that any child under 1 year and 20 lbs MUST only use the seat rear-facing. I'd love it if they'd bump that up to 2 and 30, but you know, perfect world and all that.

Yea I was confused at first by that wording when I was installing our new radian today! I had to re read it a couple of times to get what they were saying

It's the difference between saying:

"Use in a rear facing position only if the child is younger than 1 and under 20 pounds."

and saying:

"Use only in a rear facing position if the child is younger than 1 and under 20 pounds."

Although a less confusing way might be to say:

"If the child weighs less than 20 pounds and is less than a year old, this restraint must be used rear facing."

Another way to look at it is: Under 20lbs/1yr MUST be rear facing. 20-40lbs (and over 1yr) can be rear facing OR forward facing...and over 40lbs MUST be forward facing.
